Your Wedding Cake Questions- The top 10 FAQs

Your wedding cake questions, answered…

I love being asked questions about cakes. I get all sorts of unusual ones, as well as the classics. My favourite one to date is “How will you stop the cake from falling over in the car?! Contrary to popular belief and what some famous TV shows will promote, Cakes are actually extremely sturdy and not that hard to transport, so in answer to that question: Don’t worry. It won’t!

Below are some of my frequently asked questions, answered…

WILL YOU DELIVER THE CAKE?

Yes, I certainly will. I deliver all the wedding cakes I make. I don’t employ a delivery driver as it does take reasonably careful driving to deliver a cake as well as an expert way of packing them into a car. The majority of cakes I make require a certain amount of set up and decorating at venue which will take a personal touch, and I often deliver wedding cakes tier by tier and stack them at the venue. I mainly deliver wedding cakes to venues in London and the South East but have also delivered cakes to Devon, Lancashire and the Cotswolds. Just bear in mind that there will be an extra cost to travel the distance.

HOW MUCH WILL MY WEDDING CAKE COST?

This one doesn’t come with a straight answer. All the cakes I make are bespoke. If you describe what you’d like and let me know how many guests it will need to serve, I will be able to provide you with an estimate. The final costing though, will depend on all kinds of factors; the size of the cake, number of tiers, decorations, delivery and set up distance and time and the amount of time I estimate it will take to design and create. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not as simple as saying £500 for a three tier cake. Prices vary, so it’s best to get quote as bespoke as your cake will be.

CAN YOU DO VEGAN AND GLUTEN FREE CAKES?

Yes, I can. I offer dairy free cakes too. I can offer a dietary requirements cake for your venue or caterers to cut in the kitchen for your guests, or you could devote the top tier to those guests.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE A WEDDING CAKE?

In this answer, I refer back to the answer to question 2. It entirely depends on how much work is involved in a cake. On average it can take 2-3 days to complete a cake from start to finish.

IS IT ALL EDIBLE?

With my wedding cakes, everything you can see on the outside is edible. Sometimes hard to believe, right? And of course everything on the inside is edible too, though I offer fake tiers if you’re looking for a tall cake, but not to serve a lot of guests.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL IT SERVE?

Going on average number of servings for a three tier cake is a good p;ace to start. A three tier cake is a good size for 100 guests, but those tiers might be tall, wide, large or small. Us cake makers calculate how many portions you”ll get out of your cake depending on who is cutting it. I allow a bit of leeway, which is why my cakes usually come up pretty generous with number of servings. It also depends if you’re serving your wedding cake as an extra after dinner or as a dessert. Portion sizes would be larger for the latter and smaller if you are serving your cake to guests who are already pretty full after a three course meal. I’d recommend making a moment for the serving of the cake, possibly later in the evening, so that guests have room for it.

CAN I HAVE DIFFERENT FLAVOURS IN EACH TIER?

Absolutely. I encourage this. It’s a great talking point for your guests and it’s a good idea to give them the choice of at least two. Try to choose two flavours that are very different to one another or one chosen by each person in the couple.

DO YOU PROVIDE CAKE TOPPERS?

Absolutely! I can provide some super stylish cake toppers. I have a supplier who creates cut acrylic script toppers in a number of colours, any font and style. Cake toppers aren’t what they used to be; tacky and old fashioned and there are so many types available. I’d recommend making sure your cake topper will go with the overall theme of the cake though. Some cakes are best off without a topper.

DO YOU PROVIDE CAKE STANDS?

I provide cake stands as I believe your cake should be well presented and given pride of place in your venue. The stands I provide perfectly match the details of a wedding cake and compliment it’s style. Some venues do provide cake stands, though they can be old fashioned and may not go together or fit your super modern wedding cake.

CAN YOU COPY THIS CAKE (PHOTO)?

The answer to this is a big no. I won’t copy other cake maker’s cakes and there are two main reasons for this. The first one being that if the photo you have shown me is of a stylish and unique cake design, a cake maker will have spent hours, days, weeks or even years designing, testing and trying out techniques to find their own unique style. I believe that this is their intellectual property and I won’t copy it. I always say to clients that I will happily take inspiration form cake photos though. The second reason is that I may have no idea what technique they have used to achieve that design and I am not about to create a sub standard copy that just won’t look the same or as good as the original. I prefer creating a bespoke wedding cake design as unique as the couple getting married.
