Wedding Cake Ideas for 2020
2020 seems to be ‘the year’ to get married. Is it the nice round number? Is it because we all thought we would be out of the woods with the ‘B word’ behind us?
Either way, if you’re getting married in 2020 listen up! There have never been more possibilities on the table with wedding cake design. Here are my ideas for unique, modern wedding cakes in 2020…
1. Multi shaped tiers
Instead of the opting for the tradional all-round wedding cake, opt for multi-shaped and multi height tiers to mix it up. Wedding Cakes can be inspired by architecture, interiors and can be a lot more interesting with different shapes going on. I’m excited to be amking a lot more cakes in 2020 with multi shaped tiers that are still going to be tall and elegant, yet modern and sophisticated.
The traditional white wedding cake still has its place, but I firmly believe that driven by trends in interiors, there is room for a lot more colour in 2020. Think bold pinks and yellows and warm coral tones paired with classic blue; the pantone colour of the year 2020. Mix in metallic to add style and take inspiration from the colours in your bridesmaid dresses, invitations and florals.
Plain, smooth tiers paired with textured ones are a great way to add interest to your wedding cake. Think textured, stone-finish fondant, wafer paper and terrazzo finishes. Layered chocolate, cocoa butter and different icing types are also a great way to add texture in layered effects.
4. Tall tiers
Tall tiered cakes are here to stay. If you’re getting married in a grand venue with high ceilings, opt for a tall cake that can be seen in the room it’ll be displayed in. For that extra bit of height, opt for a modern cake stand to display your showstopper in full view.
Fondant makes for a much more versatile cake decorating medium that some other finishes. It makes for super-sharp, crisp edges and allows for really sturdy tall cakes. The great thing about fondant is that most cake decorators now use chocolate ganache underneath it to get that smooth, neat finish, so you can be sure it’s even more delicious than buttercream. Yum!
6. Wafer paper
Wafer paper is such a versatile cake decorating medium. And whether it’s decorations in shapes with sharp edges, or a more ethereal look, wafer paper can be used to achieve just about any shape or style you can think of.
7. Abstract painted cakes
Painted cakes have never been so popular. And while the trend is here to stay, I think things will be a lot more abstract in 2020. Think different coloured icings on the surface of the cake, like oil paints on an artist’s canvas. The possibilities are endless here when it comes to colours and styling and these layers can also feature metallic highlights.
