Thoughts from me, Katie Lake Volcof: A Wedding Cake Designer, London.
I’m a wedding cake designer in London. But what makes me a wedding cake designer and not a wedding cake maker?
Well, in my mind there are different types of cake suppliers out there, all running different businesses, some larger, some smaller, one man bands like myself, all of them doing things slightly differently.
The thing that makes me a wedding cake designer is that, well, I actually design my cakes. It sounds simple but it’s true!
Some cakes are baked and simply iced, like semi naked cakes for example. Some wedding cake makers receive an image from a client of the cake they’d like and they simply replicate it.
Other bakeries might have set, off-the peg designs that they create over and over for weddings, which aren’t personalised. There is nothing wrong with these options of course. A couple gets to choose for themselves; it’s great that there is so much choice out there and that there are different pricing levels to reflect the choice.
But what sets a wedding cake designer apart from the others is that you get a truly unique wedding cake that no one has had before, and your wedding cake designer will create a sketch of what your cake will look like which needs to be approved by you before you go ahead and order it.
As a wedding cake designer, I create computer generated sketches of my wedding cakes (my graphic design degree comes in here!) which give a really good idea of how a cake will look on the day.
I also meet with all my clients so that they can taste some of my cake flavours and we can discuss the design of their wedding cake in more detail.
My cakes are also inspired by interior design, architecture and graphic design and not by other cakes. I like to take my inspiration from outside the cake industry, widening the possibilities, pushing the boundaries and always trying to keep things new and creative.
