Alternative wedding cake ideas

Jul 14, 2020

“Be a flamingo in a flock of pigeons”. Ever heard that phrase? If you have and it’s a bit of you, then these alternative wedding cake ideas might just be for you…

Are you the kind of wedding couple that looks through images on the internet for your wedding and want the same as others have had at their weddings? Or do you want to go for something a bit more unusual? Something your guests will remember and that will make your wedding stand out above the others? Then read on!

Traditional wedding cakes with all their fancy frills, piping work and flowers are stunning. But what if you’re looking for something a bit more ‘you’? You might be getting wed in a modern, inner city venue where a traditional wedding cake won’t look the part. If this is the case, don’t feel like you have to go traditional.

It’s my job to help couples realise what’s possible with cake and that it’s changed so much in recent years. You don’t have to follow any traditions for your wedding, or for your wedding cake. Instead you can opt for a design led wedding cake that’s modern, sophisticated and fits in perfectly with your venue.

So, it’s out with the ribbons, flowers and lace and in with these modern wedding cake design and decoration ideas to show your guests what a wedding cake can really be made of…

DESIGN

The design of your wedding cake can be inspired by just about anything. I’ve even made a modern wedding cake inspired by a couple’s yellow and grey kitchen colour scheme before. I’ve designed cakes specifically to suit venues and taken inspiration from interiors, fabrics and staircases before. Wherever your wedding cake is going to be on display, make sure it’ll perfectly fit in to its surroundings. And if you want it to stand out, why not make sure it’ll be a modern statement work of art. Nothing like anything your guests have seen before? Your wedding cake designer will be able to bring your ideas to life and advise you on what will work best to achieve a showstopper that’s sure to wow your guests.

Decorations

There are some amazing effects that can be created with sugar, chocolate, wafer paper and a huge list of other ingredients that are readily available to cake makers. Wedding cakes can be a lot more experimental than they used to be. Instead of traditional decorations like sugar flowers, chocolate waves and sculptures are the perfect way of creating some ‘modern edible art’. Wafer paper is a more artistic medium being used by more and more cake makers to create cake decorations too. It a versatile medium that can be shaped, folded coloured and torn to create texture on a cake.

SHAPEs

Who said your wedding cake has to be traditionally round? I specialise in wedding cakes that vary in shapes and heights. Mixed tier shapes add to a cake’s modern look and can add some fun to an otherwise more uniform cake. You can go geometric for your wedding cake style by mixing square, hexagonal and round tiers whilst adding in geometric shapes for decoration.

Flavours

The wedding cake flavours you choose can help to make your wedding cake more modern. The cake is for eating after all! Out with the fruit cake and in with some more bold and fun sponge cake flavours like lemon and blueberry for a summer wedding date, sticky toffee pudding cake or a trip down memory lane with raspberry ripple cake; reminiscent of the classic ice cream flavour. These are just some of the flavours I have on offer. You can find more of them here.

Set up

One thing that often gets over looked with wedding cakes is how they will be set up. This is up to the cake designer on the day, of course, but can be planned to make sure your cake is displayed to really make the most of it. Go for extras like a modern cake stand to perfectly complement your wedding cake, rather than the more traditional on that your venue might offer as part of their package. Most wedding cake designers will be able to provide these.

Your cake can also be styled alongside floral arrangements, a background, props on the cake table and make sure you cake will be well lit too.

So, before you go delving into getting inspired on Pinterest by all the cakes there are out there, get a cake designer on board that can help you see what else is possible to realise a truly unique cake, just for your wedding. One, the likes of which your guests will never have seen before.

About the author…

Hi! I’m Katie and I have been fully cake obsessed since, forever…

Malarkey Cakes is built on a mixture of all my passions. My work is inspired by my background in art and design and I’m honoured to make wedding cakes for couples in love in London and the South East.

I’m passionate about blogging to share my knowledge and give guidance on the ins and out of ordering a wedding cake, making the most of it and making sure it gets the attention it deserves. I also share my tips on wedding planning and team up with fellow suppliers I am lucky enough to work with and who I highly recommend.

When I’m not making or eating cake, you’ll find me trying out new foods in London’s amazing restaurants, drinking great coffee, taking in stunning architecture, on long walks, smashing a decent weights workout or exploring the world.
