Modern wedding cake styling

Modern wedding cake styling isn’t just about cake stands and cake toppers. We have moved forward from those (but not knocking them because there is very much still a place for them!)

There are so many ways you can creatively style your modern wedding cake.

The reason I am writing this post is because I work with so many couples who don’t think through the set up of their wedding cake. I advise couples as much as I can, but there has been many a cake that I have sadly been instructed by a wedding coordinator, venue or planner, to set up in front of fire exits (safe, at least!), fire extinguishers, air con units, nasty looking radiators or windows which don’t give their photographer a chance of getting a great shot.

And when I meet with my wedding couple’s I always ask them where their cake will be set up. With all things wedding, most people haven’t been married before so couples shouldn’t be expected to think of all these things. I think it’s the job of a wedding supplier to help couple’s with advice like this.

So what do I mean by modern wedding cake styling?

Modern wedding cake styling, is, firstly thinking about where your cake will be displayed on your wedding day. Will it be in a corner? Will it be at a side wall? Will it be in the middle of your dance floor? There are ways you can really make the most of having your wedding cake and making a proper feature of it.

Modern wedding cake styling will, essentially help you to avoid having that nasty radiator in the background or that fire exit that your poor photographer will have to attempt to edit out of your cake cutting shots!

And not only that. Modern wedding cake styling can also add a whole extra feature to your wedding or be twinned with other styling ideas you might have for your set up. And the best bit of news of all: It doesn’t have to cost the earth either.

Reutilise your ceremony arch or backdrop

You might be having a stunning wedding ceremony arch. Your ceremony won’t last that long, so wouldn’t it be a shame not to be able to enjoy it for a bit longer?

The good news is that most wedding cakes are actually movable (despite what you may have been lead to believe) and your ceremony arch or backdrop could work perfectly for the rest of your wedding day as the perfect modern wedding cake styling opportunity!

Floral Wedding Installations

My current obsession is with modern, alternative floral displays. Some of the displays I see at weddings are truly inspiring. If you’re hiring a florist for your wedding, part of the set up could be a stunning backdrop to perfectly compliment your wedding cake.

A modern wedding cake styling opportunity could come from making a wedding cake table into a floral installation all of its own.

From grid walls to pampas grass arrangements, floral-adorned wedding arches and half moons, there is no end of inspiration here.

Origami and Paper backdrops

Think origami cranes or paper flowers hanging form the ceiling or in front of an exposed brickwork wall.

Perhaps when you have cut your wedding cake, your backdrop can then double up as your photo or GIF booth back drop? Again it’s the perfect way to get more use out of your décor.

I recommend checking out The Wedding Spark. They custom make beautiful things for wedding styling and their backdrops are completely bespoke and will style your day for you and talk it all down at the end of the day.

Modern neon wedding styling

I am currently obsessed with the trend of pairing neon and floral arrangements. (more ideas here).

Custom made neon lights don’t come cheap, but are a keepsake you can hold on to for life. I ‘d say the perfect way to modernise any floral display is with a meaningful neon and these set ups work perfectly as modern wedding cake styling options.

I’m actually jealous of anyone having a neon and floral display at their wedding… I need to get married again, just for this!

Modern screens and grid walls with florals and balloons

Screens can be twinned with balloons, flowers, foliage and/ or balloons to create the perfect wedding cake backdrop.

To twin with the idea of having florals and neons, the trend for grid walls is currently huge!

And again these screens can be reutilised as photo walls for later on in the party. Win, win!

Whether or not you choose to go for a modern wedding cake styling option. I would certainly have a good think about where your wedding cake will be set up and how it will be styled.
